Pushkar Resort Perfect family Getaway from Delhi &  Jaipur

Nobody can resist the charms of Rang Rangeelo Rajasthan, famous for its royal palaces, golden dunes, endangered tigers and some of the most luxurious resorts in the country.

As the biggest tourist magnet in North India Rajasthan has perfected the art of luxury travel and everywhere you are welcomed with Padharo Mhare desh by mustached men welcoming you with folded hands.

Once we left the cacophony of Ajmer the roads start winding uphill and you can see the city of Ajmer from various bends overlooking the plane. True to tradition an old man with big mustaches welcomes us at the gate of Pushkar Resorts in Pushkar. The first thing you notice at Pushkar resorts is the greenery around you. From the manicured lawns to the organic gardens soothing green sprinkled with flowers of every color welcome you. Whoever coined the term desert state has never actually visited Aravalis in Rajasthan.

I look at the haveli like building and am impressed only to be told this is just the reception, library and spa we will be staying in one of the private cottages. The kids were excited to see the pool and want to jump into it straight away. Their mom had to cajole them to the room to change before they are allowed to spend rest of the afternoon lazing in the pool.

The Pushkar Resort is built around the pool with the organic gardens forming the periphery and you are never more than a few feet away to pluck seasonal fruits straight from the trees. (A more detailed  blog post on nature/birds on Pushkar Resorts will follow how about subscribing to desi Traveler to get it in your mailbox) Ok, ad over lets us move forward.

The pool reflects more than moonlight in the night

We were escorted to our cottage walking on a path meandering through gardens, creepers forming a canopy to give you shade from the still hot Rajasthan Sun.  Our cottage has a small patio to sit and enjoy our morning tea while we listen to the chirping of birds, pecking at the Aonla (Indian gooseberry – Phyllanthus emblica) trees just a few feet from us. Inside we are welcomed by colors of Rajasthan on our bed, upholstery made of bandhej and mirror work. The cottage has a separate sitting area with a large window that directly opens into the orchard. The bathrooms follow the concept of minimalistic luxury, and the aroma coming from organic soaps invites me to take a quick shower.

After the shower, we walk to the dining hall that stands on one side of the pool.

The chef is kind enough to make nonspicy food for our younger daughter who is the most finicky eater in our family. Fortunately, she is pleased with the outcome and the chef and the staff is visibly relieved at making a 5-year-old happy.

While I roam around clicking pictures the daughter and missus spend most of their time in the pool refusing to get out of the water so that I can take a clean shot of the pool.

Finally, only when they are ready to go back to the cottage I manage a few quick shots of the pool, pledging to come back around Sunset. As the sun sets the dust in the air gives a thousand hues to the horizon changing every second giving a new meaning to kaleidoscope. Once the pool lights are switched on it is transformed into a shining jewel in the sea of darkness around it.

The food at Pushkar resort is either grown on the resort or sourced locally you can feel the freshness of the veggies as you take your first bite.  But once again our Miss Pinkette who has now become friends with the restaurant captain is served special pasta that she accepts as if doing a favor to the chef.

“OK, I will try this pasta” she takes her first bite and signals with her hands that she loves it. I am sure the chef has never served a more discerning gourmet than this little brat of ours. The other dishes served are a combo of Indian and continental and the menu changes daily as per the type of guests staying at the resort.

Next morning was spent enjoying a thorough massage at the rooftop spa. The resort offers different massages and therapies by trained professionals in their spa which also has a Jacuzzi.

In the evening we hopped on a camel cart to visit the Pushkar Brahma Temple and the Pushkar Lake but that dear reader is another story.

The resort organizes various activities like camel ride, spa treatments, visit to Pushkar, Ajmer, organic farm visit etc. There are a lot of activities for kids to do from reading books in the library ( yes some people still read books ), swimming pool, bird watching, chess,  badminton, volleyball, sand and other sports.

We were invited by Sewara Hospitality for a family visit to the Pushkar Resorts near Ajmer in Rajasthan and we really enjoyed our stay there.

Best Time to Visit:  Pushkar is best-visited post monsoons so best weather is from mid-September to mid-March. There is annual Pushkar Camel Fair in November that should be on your must visit if you are in India during November.

How to reach Pushkar:  Pushkar has its own station but your best bet is reaching Ajmer about 12 KM away which is well-connected with all major cities in India.  The road from Delhi is excellent and you can take NH8 via Gurgaon, Jaipur, Ajmer and then  Pushkar. Total drive time of about 5-7  hours depending on traffic conditions for a driving distance of about 410 KM from Delhi.

Nearest Airport to Pushkar is Sanganer airport in Jaipur ( IATA code: JAI )   about 120 KM away.
