Where Tigers Rule: Jogi Mahal

Today’s travel pictures is from Rang Rangeelo Rajasthan, the state equally famous for Royal Palaces, and the most Royal of the beasts -The Royal Bengal Tiger in Ranthambore National Park near the Sawai Madhopur town.  Here I am giving the picture of Jogi Mahal, on the bank of Padam Talab inside the Ranthambore National Park. This picture was taken from the top of Ranthambore Fort on a sunny afternoon. From the top of the fort Jogi Mahal looks as if trying to hide in the dense jungle, thanks to always full Padam Talab, who gets its name from the hundreds of lilies that bloom in the waters.  Indeed this lake has seen many a battles between queen of Ranthambore, Machli the Tigress, and Sambhars and in one photographed case a huge crocodile the lake is  home to, one of which is visible as a speck in the waters of Padam Talao. The huge tree you see in the foreground is part of what is considered the 2nd largest Banyan Tree in India.

Jogi Mahal on banks of Padam Talab in Ranthambore

Jogi Mahal at one point was the hunting lodge of the Jaipur Royals, and later got converted to a forest rest house. As normally Ranthambore is very dry throughout the year, Padam Talao, which is full with water year round is a favorite hunting area of the Tigers as the thirsty animals come to drink her. Jogi Mahal  shot to fame when former PM Rajiv Gandhi, holidayed here with his family. I clicked this picture many years ago using a point and shoot camera ( which costed a bomb in those days) . After an unfortunate poaching incident the rest house was closed for tourists, I am not sure what the situation is now. But there are lots of hotels and resorts in and around Ranthambore, Sawai Madhopur, and you are spoilt for choice. Ranthambore is a favorite weekend getaway from Delhi to drive, but my suggestion would be to take a train as roads beyond National Highway are not very good.
