Holy Dip on Kartik Purnima at Varanasi Ghats

Millions take a holy dip in Ganges on Kartik Purnima. I was  in Benaras or Varanasi this Kartik Purnima and observed these thousands of people taking a holy dip in the chilly waters.  I was feeling shivers just by looking at them. But what amazed me most was that though most of the people were total strangers to each other in such close proximity with hardly any space between them. Yet thousands bathe together in such perfect synchronization, that one wonders who is directing them? And the colors! Oh the colors are amazing, just check this picture with all colors of India like green, red, azure, saffron smiling from clothes, flags, flowers, posters, ads, umbrellas and sky jostling for space on the vast canvas of Varanasi Ghats.

Benaras Varanasi Ghat Bathing Kartik Purnima

Colors of India: Holy dip in Ganga at Dashashwamedh Ghat on Kartik Purnima Varanasi

As one wave took there dip and started there ascent on the Ghats of Varanasi another one followed and the waves continued one after another. The colors, the clothes, the collapsing boundaries of personal space, this is something which you can find only during public festivals in India.  This picture was taken on Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi, one of the main Ghats. Dashashwamedh Ghat has lot of action and fortunately not used as open toilet like many other ghats in Benaras. By the way if you are wondering about the two guys in the left lower corner, they are cops/lifeguards watching the proceedings and screaming on those trying to come in deeper waters in the fast flowing Ganges. There is so much to see, observe, experience, try and eat in Benaras that I need to work on a series on the same. Watch this space for more to come in.
