September 2015 calendar desktop wallpaper: Satpura Ke Ghane Jungle

September is here and so is our September 2015 Calendar desktop wallpaper for download,  from your friendly neighborhood desi Traveler.

Most of us when we go to jungle, focus on the big cats and return totally disappointed if they are unable to spot tigers. Don’t  get me wrong, I love tigers,  but in our country our love for tigers is very similar to our craze for cricket. Just like cricket crazy fans do not talk about any other sport, no matter what our sportsmen may achieve in other sports, same way wildlife for most of us means Tigers.  Now that is wonderful but as I always say in your quest for big cats do not forget other wonderful birds and animals around you. Every India jungle has fauna that if observed closely will give you oppurtunity for some excellent observation for wildlife, some memorable photographs and in my case September 2015 Calendar Desktop wallpaper.

This particular picture of a Sambhar was clicked in the Satpura National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Like I mentioned in the post Satupra forests are unique among all the forests in Central India, for many reasons. Right from being a combination of open grasslands, hilly terrain with different kind of flora found in different parts of the forest and combine that with the backwaters of Tawa Dam that play host to a variety of birds both local and guests from cooler countries.

Anyways let me talk about this picture of the Sambhar lurking from behind the magnificent mixed forest of Satpura. Just from the bark you can find Terminalia elliptica   or the Crocodile Bark Tree, known for storing water inside its stem.

Then you can see Teak tree right in the foreground in left, Mahua,( Madhuca longifolia ) , whose fruits are relished by sloth bear and when the fruits juices ferment in the Bear Belly the bear roam around in an intoxicated state and unfortunately often are caught by poachers.  Don’t forget to look at the grasses and creepers around some of the trees that give Satpura Forests their unique character.  Can you name the other trees seen in this picture ? No wonder Pandit Bhavani Prasad Mishra penned his immortal poem about Satpura Ke Ghane Jungle or the dense forests of Satpura. If you know how to read  Hindi, may I suggest you read the complete poem and decide it is written by a poet or a naturalist.

poem copied from : Kaavyaalay

How minutely the poet has captured the essence, and the mood of the jungle from the creepers, to the birds playing around to the fear that the darkness of the jungle invokes in you. He compares the Jungles of Satpura with the infinite Oceans that have no end or beginning. He has documented the jungles like a naturalist from the endemic Gond tribals to the yellow Mahua flowers and the giant webs of spiders. I am not translating the poem as I don’t think I will be able to do justice to the words. But if you do want to understand the poem visit the Jungle of Satpura, you may start your journey as a nature lover, but you will come back as a poet.  Though sometime I feel they are the same .
