Family Fun in Coracle or Round Boats of Nagarjuna Sagar

A Joy Ride in a Coracle  in Nagarjuna Sagar Coracles ( singular- Coracle) or the round boats have been around for millenniums, Julius Caesar found the English using them during his invasion.  And while the indigenous shipbuilding industry in India was slowly decimated by the British, ( probably as an act of revenge to supply ships to American Navy for the British American war in 1812.  A little-known fact: American national anthem was written on a ship made by the Wadia Family of India) still the art of making Coracles survived. Although one wonders what happened to shipbuilding in India when just [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Beach Road Pondicherry- An Evening Walk to Enjoy Bapu was born in Porbandar, a city with nice beaches, and historical port that was once major center of commerce, but that later became known for gang wars and movies were made on its notorious Gang led by the Godmother Santokben Jadeja, where Shabana Azmi played the lead character. But Bapu left Porbandar long ago and left his mark not only in this country but also in South Africa and other countries in the world.   To respect Bapu’s association with the beach city he was born in almost every city on [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Bhandara for Breakfast-On way to Kanha National Park

Great Breakfast on the Way to Kanha National Park One of the little joys of traveling is discovering little joints that serve excellent food in hygienic conditions. Frequent road travelers in India will agree that it is not an easy task. You get a lot of places with food that will make your salivary glands work overtime but normally the hygiene is something you just have to ignore. Let me talk about one such little place we discovered on our trip to Kanha National park in Madhya Pradesh. This was a trip with GHAC and my friend Sunanda Mandavi was leading the group, [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Birthplace of Hanuman and Temples Of Hampi

Hiking To The Birth Place of Hanuman Near Hampi The Birthplace of Hanuman Temple This is the third post on Hampi with TCPC As we were staying on the Kishkindha side of Tungabhadra, day one was dedicated to exploring the various temples in the area. This part is called Anegundi and is believed to be the capital of empire before Hampi rose to prominence.  Is it not amazing how many towns and cities have had their share of being the capital of a mighty empire and you had to fight mighty armies to reach them, and yet today they [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

A Bus Ride to Hampi For a Photography Trip

My Visit to Hampi in a Volvo Bus Travel and Photography are Siamese twins. I have not been able to figure out whether I started clicking pictures as I wanted to capture my travels or I started traveling so that I could capture pictures of distant lands. Anyways the debate is useless as you cannot separate the Siamese twins, and not that they want to be separated. The latest jaunt of desi Traveler was to the erstwhile capital of the Vijayanagaram empire in Hampi, in Karnataka a town that is more than 1000 years old on the banks of river Tungabhadra. Durgam Cheruvu With GHAC Nature

Rediscovering Nature in the IT Corridor of Hyderabad at Durgam Cheruvu The Birders at Durgan Cheruvu Durgam Cheruvu was named because it meant Secret Lake and was very difficult to both find and reach. During the times of Qutub Shahi Sultans the lake was surrounded by jungle so thick that except for few locals nobody knew of its existence. Its water was pure and potable, so the sultans built secret system of pipe lines to take the water from the lake to the Golconda Fort around  10 KM away to the top of the fort using a very innovative [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Sanjay Gandhi National Park- Borivali

When you are looking to click wildlife there are days when lady luck is smiling at you and then there are days when the she is laughing at you! Last weekend Desi Traveler was in Mumbai  for some personal work.  We have lived in Mumbai for more than a year, and did most of the touristy things in that one year- Juhu Beach, Elephanta Caves, Gateway of India etc. One of the regrets I always had was not been able to visit Borivali National park or Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, a green oasis in the middle of [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

A Money Savvy Model

We city dwellers always think that we are the smartest bunch around, only to be humbled  by simple folks around us time and again. Some time back I visited the Nallamala forest near the Srisailam temple. It is a very sparsely populated area and most of the folks living are farmers and some tribals. Education levels are very poor, and for a city bred guy like me it is difficult to understand the folksy wisdom passed down from one generation to another in our villages. While coming back we stopped in a village haat to buy some locally grown fruits, whose taste is [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

A Visit to Medak Church, Fort and Pocharam Sanctuary

Road Trip to Medak From Hyderabad With GHAC The Medak Cathedral The joys of travel are hard to explain, words cannot capture the thrill of discovering new lands, photos struggle to do justice to the bounty of nature. Yet here I am trying to write a blog about an incredible travel. I guess the next best thing to travel to distant lands is to write and share the stories of falling in love again and again with the places one discover. I specially enjoy driving trips as they give me both flexibility and control not only on the destination [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]
