It Was A Dark & Stormy Night in Satpura

The Lantern Man and other stories from Jungles of Satpura “It was a dark and stormy night”, those scary lines flashed across my mind as I saw the streak of light moving around in a serpentine fashion towards my cottage. I cursed myself for not remembering Hanuman Chalisa even though my grandmother had tried to teach it to me a hundred times when I  was growing. As the light continued to move languidly in my direction, stopping for a moment, and then continuing again the line “”It was a dark and stormy night”, now took me to old Bollywood movies [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Birding on a Canoe Ride in Satpura National Park

Sunset Canoe Ride & Birding In Satpura National Park Last time I visited Denwa Backwater Escape, on the periphery of Satpura Tiger Reserve, I was with Wife Jee and kids and we had a great time. So when I was invited by Pugdundee Safaris to visit Satpura once again I was indeed looking forward to it.  The fact that Wife Jee and kids were not happy on my solo visit is another story but I will not spill our family beans here. So on a hot afternoon, I arrived at Denwa Backwater Escape and the moment I met Chinmay [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Photographing Birds In Backyard

Tips on watching & Photographing birds in Backyard It is not possible to visit wildlife parks regularly for many reasons, time and money just two of them. So how does one quench the thirst to click nature around you? Well for me I look around photographing birds in the backyard. Technically it is not backyard as I live in a high-rise building that has emerged from the ashes of golden Sarson Ke Khet. I have to live with this burden for a long time but I try to compensate by doing my bit for our little friends around us, like [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

A Morning Drive to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary & The Last Sarson Ke Khet of Gurgaon

The last of Sarson Ke Khet Near Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary That I regularly go bird watching at  Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary near Gurgaon is old news. While I enjoy bird watching there with my friends and family at Sultanpur, each visit also now makes me a bit sad. As we approach the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary and the Basai Wetlands that are on the way, the thoughts about future of these birding heavens make me gloomy because of the future of the Sanctuary, as well as the Basai Wetlands, is not secure. For me, the visit to nature is all about the ecosystem, [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

You Are The Power Of We- Join Hands To Save Our Tigers

Crowd Sourcing Tiger Conservation- Save Our Tigers First a good news: The total number of tigers has increased in India from 1,706 in 2011 to 2,226 in 2014. This is a healthy 30 % increase. While this is a matter of joy it also brings more responsibility on both the government and people as increased tiger population in a scenario when the habitat is decreasing puts pressure on the current tiger reserves , so we need more tiger reserves.  One of the foremost point of tiger conservation is that when you save a tiger  you automatically save 100s of other species [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

Trip Report : Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary Birding with Kids

Birdwatching with Kids at Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary I think first time I went to Sultanpur bird sanctuary was  before I was 10. I don’t remember seeing any birds at that time but we had great fun playing in the open. After that I have been to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary outside Gurgaon many times. Every now and then I take kids also for bird watching to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary.  Though I am not sure how long the Sanctuary and the birds there will be able to withstand the steady growth of concrete jungle and mobile towers around it.  So I try [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]

September 2015 calendar desktop wallpaper: Satpura Ke Ghane Jungle September is here and so is our September 2015 Calendar desktop wallpaper for download,  from your friendly neighborhood desi Traveler. Most of us when we go to jungle, focus on the big cats and return totally disappointed if they are unable to spot tigers. Don’t  get me wrong, I love tigers,  but in our country our love for tigers is very similar to our craze for cricket. World Tiger Day July 29th- Aircel shows how you can help

Aircel Shows how you can help save tigers & launches Tigoji App   29th July is World Tiger Day and we have a little bit to celebrate. If the media reports are to be believed the tiger numbers in India are 2226, up from 1411 in 2006. This is a healthy increase considering the threats to long tern success of Panthera Tigris or Royal Bengal Tiger remain intact and are only increasing. Last evening I attended an event by Aircel one of the major players in mobile telephone sector in India. If you watch you must have seen some heartwarming [Continue Reading By Clicking Here…]
