Double Humped Bactrian Camels of Nubra Valley on June 2017 Calendar Desktop Wallpaper

Before we talk about the June 2017 Desktop Wallpaper Calendar let me ask you if you have heard or read the joke about the baby camel and his mom?

The little baby camel has a hundred questions to ask his mom.

“Why do we have thick eyelashes?”

“Why are our feet padded?

“Why do we Camels have 2 humps on our back?

You know the kind of questions baby camels asks their mom?

But before we move forward did you notice we are talking about “ Two Humps”  Yes, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, this post may have started invoking a joke but it is actually about the double-humped Bactrian camels found in the Nubra Valley, Hunder Village about 11.7 KM from Diskit town. For all practical purpose, these are feral camels living wild and are less than 200 in numbers who are descendants of camels that were left to fend for themselves when the caravans on the Silk route stopped due to change in the geopolitical situation.

Some of the enterprising locals have enticed some of the camels into domestication and use them to offer camel ride to the tourists. The camels train moving on the sand dunes looks very impressive and reminds you of the large caravan that once crisscrossed these forbidden lands that were cut off from rest of the world for more than 6 months in a year.

Now the few of the domesticated camels are put into service for tourists for a joy ride. The money helps the local economy the camels still fend for themselves chewing on the sparse vegetation found in the valley and attempts at entering various farms around as the vegetation is always greener and juiciest in the fields and farms.

But mostly the camels are on their own after sunset and during the winters and are brought back into service during the summer.  In India Hunder village Nubra valley is the only place you find these double humped Bactrian Camel. Originally these camels are not from this area but from vast plains between Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and what was in those days Persia but as they were very important for silk and spice trade along the ancient silk route many villages kept them and were a sign of wealth in those days.

I don’t think I have written much about my visit to Ladakh, where I was to attend Naropa Festival, I and need to write more but in the meantime you do check, like, download and share your June 2017 Desktop Wallpaper Calendar featuring a Camel Train of Double Humped Bactrian Camels of Nubra Valley in Ladakh .  The image was made on a pleasant September evening just before sunset (sunset happens rather rapidly in these valleys surrounded by high mountains)

  1. Bactrian Camels in India!? Kind of makes me think of the poor Anubha valley like a Chowpatty! But that’s what large scale tourism does…

  2. Interesting facts about the double-humped camel. I’d never thought about feral camels, before.
    Thank you Prasad.

Btw that’s a beautiful picture. Lovely colours. 🙂

  3. Truly Awesome pic.
