Your eyes are open but you are not sure if you hav Your eyes are open but you are not sure if you have woken up or if the dream is still continuing. For the morning rays of Sun are enacting a dance drama on the wall opposite your bed. You try to figure out what is happening. It turns out that the kaleidoscopic dance drama on your room's wall is thanks to the Eastman color window glass that is partly inspired by rainbow on the distant mountains and part from the Himalayan flowers that find a way to mesmerize you every time you see them. You want to go back to your dream but you realize time is of the essence, for the dance of the sunrays is on the borrowed time a la Cinderella, with the clock ticking, so you quickly grab your camera, and click like there is no tomorrow. All I can say is that It was a very good morning at the Chateau Garli in the heritage village Garli in #Kangra #HimachalPradesh⠀ Here is a question for you: Are your dreams Black and white or you see them in color? The Mask starring Jim Carrey is one of my all-time The Mask starring Jim Carrey is one of my all-time favorite movies. Carrey finds " The Mask" & his life changes from an also-ran, to a man that nobody can stop add to that a crazy sense of humor, laced with " Grande" size superpowers & you have a laugh riot all the way. But that was the movies, I have had the good fortune of seeing a mask in action in real life when I met the Mask Makers of #Majuli in #Assam. We were on a Satra discovery journey when we reached Samaguri Satra and met the famous mask maker Sri Hem Chandra Goswami. A soft-spoken man, clearly uncomfortable with all the questions & snapping cameras around him, but still courteous to his guests he explained about the various masks, the significance of each color used, techniques employed & the character the mask represents. He showcases each mask as if talking about his family members, a loyal Garuda here, an angry God there, a Demon with nefarious plans, he has all the Hindu Mythology hanging on his walls. On my requests, he agrees to adorn one of the masks and show us how it is used. He grabs a nearby mask that is of Vanar King Bali. The moment Goswami jee wears the mask the vibes change in the room, the lazy Sun that has been hiding behind clouds since morning penetrates them, and canopy of tall trees that were obstructing his path, the room is suddenly bright, with the sun shining directly on the face of Bali. Next moment you know the droopy shoulders become tense, the voice gruffs, the chest expands to a full 56 inches and some and he starts dialogues. Dialogues that he has learned as a kid from his father, and who from his father and so on, till we reach the first time these texts were adapted in the local language. The sounds he is making are not coming from him or his mask they originate somewhere deep down in the stomach and emerge reverberating through his body with echoes that send a chill through our spines. I am pretty sure he also understands more than one language besides Hindi like English, Ladakhi, Hebrew, Russian, French, etc. These mongrels in Ladakh are pretty international I am telling you when it comes to understanding the language of love.⠀This charmer totally stole my heart with his eagerness to make friends and enticingly led me to this perfect spot to click him. Most of them are dependent on food scraps from local shops, and residents. With shops closed and residents in lockdown, life is tough for them. In the housing society, I live some kind souls have taken the onus to go out ( with proper protection, etc. ) and feed some of our local strays. Before the village bazaar ends & the forest begins Before the village bazaar ends & the forest begins there is an old bakery in the Village Garli. An old bakery with the wood-fired oven, yes the same type which Pizza joints now like to flaunt. The bakery does not make any fancy 5 tiered wedding cakes, nor do they have any time for any challenges on social media to bake the latest eggless, sugarless, doughless, glutenless, fireless, tasteless cake, decorated with latest fancy flowers plucked from insecticide sprayed garden. What they do bake is some humble atta biscuits, a few batches of Suzi Rusks, some matthis to be cherished with local mango pickle. A few kids returning from school stop by and buy a few biscuits and share them, one of the bolder ones in the group offers me one, that I readily accept in lieu of clicking his picture. A nearby chaiwala screams, and says, " O Maharaj , mere biscuit 5 baje say Pehle ready kar dena". I look at the batch of biscuits the busy baker is giving shape in his hand pressed machine, one biscuit at a time. These are the same biscuits I had for breakfast the Chateau Garli I was staying at. ⠀ I wonder if he would like to be clicked. He nods, without smiling for he has a fire going in the wood-fired oven. He is a busy man with no time for vanities like getting a picture clicked.⠀ So dear reader I am sorry you were saying something? Oh you also bake? , Acha for the latest social media baking challenge you baked sourdough bread?? Wow!!
